Milies is a mountainous village of southern Pelion, built at 400 m altitude and 28 km east of Volos. It is the seat of the Municipality of Milies. According to the census of 2001, the municipal district of Milies has 636 inhabitants. It is said that the village was founded by residents of the village of Milies Evia, who left to escape from pirate attacks. For this reason, the village’s location is such that it does not see the sea, but the village can not be seen from the sea. Milies is the home of Anthimos Gazis and Gregory Konstanta, who founded in 1814 the “Soul Souk” School, which today operates as a library of rare books and historical heirlooms. Still, Milies was the first village to rebelliate in Pelion in the Revolution of ’21. The famous “School of Milies”, founded by Gazis, Konstantas and Philippidis, was an important spiritual center of the time and the center of the liberation struggle of 1821. The School operated in the location of today’s Millennium High School. As a result of the enlightening work of the famous School of Milies, there has been the establishment of the magnificent library of the Milies “Soul Soul”, which today works with more than 3,500 rare books and historical heirlooms. In the village there is the church of Pammegiston Taxiarches, which was renovated in 1741, while it is unknown when it was first built and by whom. The church is a typical example of local traditional architecture and has remarkable post-Byzantine hagiographies. It is built so that any sound in it does not sound out, because Christianity was forbidden at that time. It was built in the middle of the 18th century during the Ottoman occupation in such a way that its exterior, without bell tower and other religious symbols or examples of ecclesiastical architecture, does not betray the true nature of the building. The train of Pelion in Milies In Milies, a railroad built by the father of the famous surrealist painter Giorgio De Chirico, Evaristo de Chirico, was built at the end of the 19th century, linking the commercial and industrial center of Volos to the fertile and rich area of West Pelion. In 1985 the train of Pelion was designated as a preserved historical monument. In 1996 and after a series of repairs, it was reopened, covering a total of 16 kilometers, from Lechonia to Milies, offering the passenger the opportunity to enjoy the unique natural beauty of the landscape and elaborate architectural constructions, from April to in October. The lush vegetation, the Pagasitikos View, the arched bridges, the small tunnels and the De Kirico Iron Bridge are the key elements for one of the most beautiful routes in Europe.
