Portaria is a traditional settlement of the prefecture of Magnesia, built on the western slopes of Mount Pelion north of Volos. It is the main village of the region, as it has grown greatly in the past and today still retains its population mainly thanks to the tourist business. A characteristic feature of Portaria is the large mansions of the Thessalian-Macedonian style with a roof of stone slabs. Most of them today are renovated and function as hostels. Portaria belongs to the Municipality of Volos and its population, according to the 2011 census is 552 inhabitants. The original settlement in the area of ​​Portaria was created during the Slavic settlements in Greece. The settlement that was created then refers to documents of the Byzantine period named Dryanouna. By the end of the Byzantine period monasteries were founded, most of which, at the end of the 13th century, were founded by Dimitriadis, Nicholas Maliainos, with his wife Anna. One of the monasteries that were founded at that time was the monastery of Panagia Portárea, to which Portaria, according to the prevailing view, owes its current name. In the Ottoman rule Portaria and then Portaria. During the Ottoman occupation, the Pelion region is populated, gathering populations that resort to lowland areas. In the 18th century, Portaria has already evolved into an important commercial and craft center of the region, knowing its great development, which is reflected in its large mansions, many of which have been preserved to this day. Portaria at that time is famous for its silk woven fabrics and handkerchiefs, as well as for its great bazaar, which was probably the most important of Thessaly. Portaria was one of the main centers of the Thessalian Revolution of 1878. With the liberation of Thessaly in 1881, it became part of the Greek state and was the seat of the municipality of Ormini. From 1912 until 1998 it became the seat of the community, while in 1998 it is the seat of the extended Municipality of Portaria. Since 2011 it has been administratively in the Municipality of Volos. Portaria is today characterized as a place of special natural beauty, along with its neighboring Makrinitsa, as well as a traditional settlement.
